Farm Life Friday: Vidalia Onions

Meet the state vegetable of Georgia!! You may have heard of these sweet South Georgia onions before, and though it seems completely un-southern of me to dislike them, it's really nothing personal. I loathe all onions-every color, size, and origin. I'm weird, I know. But, everyone else I know looks forward to this time of year when the "best onions you will ever put in your mouth" are available. If you like onions and have an opportunity to try them, you really should! Look up some good ol' Southern Vidalia Onion recipes, too :) These onions are grown in only 20 counties in South Georgia because the of the nature of the soil, more specifically, the low amounts of sulfur in the soil. This makes them a delicacy for all. Vidalia, Georgia, which is just 30 minutes west of us, hosts the annual Vidalia Onion Festival every year and we are looking forward to going at the end of this month. We live right in the mix of all the onion growing, and it is really amazing to see hundreds of thousands of acres of sweet Vidalia onions growing. Here's a glimpse of what we see and smell everyday. Remember to support and thank your local farmers. They are feeding the world and it's not an easy job, but it sure is a beautiful one! Have a great weekend, y'all! xoxo
