Colic Emergency

Gotta love those 9pm emergency calls about a horse who is in pain on a farm over 30 min. away! Drive to the clinic. Get things you think you might need that are not in the farm truck. Drive out in the farm truck. I look up all of the prices for procedure and inventory on things we know/think we may be using. Get calculator and calculate prices, tax, etc. the entire drive. Help Dr. B look for the farm in the dark. Turn around after we passed the driveway. By now it's after 10pm. Get out and introduce ourselves and begin to examine the situation. Give a mild sedative. Check gums and teeth. Listen to heartbeat. Take temperature. Heart rate is over 70 bmp. Bad. Palpate. Horse a little impacted.Horse proceeds to walk around and do the "colic stance/saw horse stance" to let us know he is in fact colicing. Put a tube in and give mineral oil and spirits after checking for acid reflux. Give it Bantamine. Walk it. Major nosebleed after removing tube. It's now 11pm. Nosebleed won't stop. Hold it's head up. Walk it. Stuff it. It sneezes all over me. The pictures of my clothes don't do justice. Blood is literally splattered all over me. Even on my arms and face. I kinda like it. We finally get the bleeding to subside. Dr. B gives diagnosis and treatment. Pulling out of their driveway at 12:07 am. Drive back to the clinic. Switch trucks. Get home at 12:48 am. Dr. B is exhausted and not looking forward to tomorrow. It's been a long stressful week and the weekend is looking like it's going to be stressful, too. Truth is...I had a blast tonight, as usual. Praying for Dr. B. to get some rejuvenation. We work together like peas and carrots :). "The LORD replied, "My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest." Exodus 33:14
